The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue
Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
