A minimum of thirteen people perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
